My name is Josie Gradwell and I am 24 years old. Being a Catholic has always been a profound part of my life and family. I went to Catholic schools, attended Mass weekly and had, what I thought, was a clear understanding of the Catholic faith. As I quietly continued on my faith journey the simple question of “why” kept occurring. “ WHY are you a Catholic?”, “WHY do you believe in GOD?”, “WHY are they your values/beliefs/faith”. When you are questioned about your faith and your own response feels inadequate, you begin to question yourself. Becoming a reader at Church has helped me to understand and learn about the Scripture. However, I still had questions, thoughts and ideas that I needed to explore. When I first heard of Alpha my first thought was “it‘s just not for me”. But as the days passed and I thought more about it, plus a subtle hint from Fr. Rex, I thought “why not”. Starting Alpha I felt hesitant and very much out of my comfort zone. Whilst doing Alpha last year in our parish, I was truly blown away. It was such a positive and fulfilling experience. My Alpha group was made up of people with different lives, personalities, and experiences, not one of us the same - making this the catalyst for positive and interesting conversation as we explored various avenues. It is a beautiful moment when you look around a room at people of all different ages and realise that it is ok to be unsure and to question. But it’s because of this that I want to learn and deepen my understanding. I have been very lucky to become a part of such a supportive group, I have learnt a lot from the leaders who through their kindness and understanding have been a great example to follow. This experience has given me the opportunity to see how every person’s relationship with God is different. The way they see Him, think of Him, love Him, and speak to Him. The experience has given me comfort in knowing that there is not just one 'right' way to know God. I remember a beautiful quote that we looked at in week 2 “ Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with the person, and they with me”. Revelations 3:20. Alpha has given me a deeper knowledge of history, it has supplied me with the chance to meet others, explore, discuss and enjoy their company by sharing a meal and a laugh. Alpha has created an atmosphere of understanding, belonging and courage. Josie Gradwell |
